Edmonton man pleads guilty to tax evasion and filing false GST returns
Edmonton, Alberta, October 15, 2009… The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced today that Mr. Jim Hillman, age 52, of Edmonton, Alberta, pleaded guilty in Edmonton Provincial court to tax evasion and was fined $16, 277.
Court heard that for the years 2004 and 2005 Mr. Hillman understated the revenue in eight GST returns he prepared and filed for the sole proprietorship of his spouse, Lyne Hillman. In addition, he prepared the year end figures for the business from which an external accountant prepared Ms. Hillman’s personal tax returns. The total unreported income on Ms. Hillman’s personal income tax returns was $67,823, resulting in federal tax evaded of $16,277.
In addition to any fines imposed by the court, people found guilty of tax evasion still have to pay the taxes, interest and penalties imposed under the Income Tax Act and the Excise Tax Act
